Common Mistakes When Using Self Storage

self storage, mistakes

Self Storage isn’t as straight forward as you think. In fact, there are many things that people do wrong that result in damaged possessions and ruined goods.

Common Self Storage Mistakes

Lots of people have more possessions than they can fit in their home or garage. This is one of the reasons garage sales are so popular. What happens if you have items you don’t need in your home but can’t really get rid of yet due to sentimental or emotional attachment?

A simple solution is a self storage locker. There are many reasons one might need to rent self storage, and it is a perfect solution for removing clutter in your house or apartment at a cost-effective rate.

If you’re like most people, you will probably put everything in labeled boxes, take the boxes down to your storage unit and forget about them. When you do need your possessions, you return and find items broken or covered in mildew. Why? By taking a few precautions and using some common sense, you can pack your things correctly and find them in perfect condition when you return for them, just by following these top tips:

Pack Your Possessions Clean and Dry

Ensure everything you pack in your storage unit is clean and dry. When wet items are left in closed quarters for an extended period of time, bacteria, mold and mildew can form and ruin your goods. You can even invest in a product called “Damp Rid”. It’s simply a tub that you open up and it wicks all the moisture from the air in your unit.

Use Bubble Wrap

Writing “Fragile” on the boxes is one thing but you should use bubble wrap to protect any lamps, glass, fragile items. Wrapping these items in newspaper is unlikely to be enough to protect them, and the ink from the newspaper can easily transfer to your belongings, possibly ruining them. If you are short on bubble wrap, try using newspaper to wrap plates and bowls. If the items are very fragile, packing peanuts in conjunction with bubble wrap would be a better option.

Most of this is common sense, but preparing your possessions to put in to storage properly is a simple job and will save time and money in the long run.
